Environmental licence granted to the central water treatment plant by the Regional State Administrative Agency

The Regional State Administrative Agency for Northern Finland has granted Terrafame Ltd. an environmental licence, which allows the company to introduce a new central water treatment plant. The plant will gradually replace the smaller water treatment units operating in the mine area and help to centralise the treatment of deposits of water treatment at one point.

“Our water treatment has operated very well. The concentration of metals in the water discharged from the mine area has been only about a tenth of the permit limits, and the sulphate concentration has been less than half the permit limit. The central water treatment plant makes the treatment of water even more efficient and ensures an excellent result,” says Chief Sustainability Officer Veli-Matti Hilla.

Terrafame began a test run of the central water treatment plant in November to set optimal operating parameters for the plant. The launch of the test run was celebrated by a small-scale event, where emeritus professor and astronomer Esko Valtaoja spoke as the guest of honour.
