Kainuu ELY Centre approves the notification Terrafame has submitted pursuant to section 123 of the Environmental Protection Act regarding the commissioning of gypsum pond 3

The Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment of Kainuu has on 19 November 2020 issued its decision regarding the notification Terrafame submitted on 3 November 2020 pursuant to section 123 of the Environmental Protection Act regarding the commissioning of gypsum pond 3 due to an exceptional situation.

In its decision, the Kainuu ELY Centre states that it approves the notification Terrafame has submitted pursuant to section 123 of the Environmental Protection Act regarding an exceptional situation. In connection with the decision, the Kainuu ELY Centre has issued regulations concerning, among other things, the use of gypsum ponds and the management of solution circulation.

On 3 November, 2020, Terrafame took into use the new gypsum pond (KS3) even though it does not have an environmental permit yet. The gypsum pond KS3 was designed and built in compliance with requirements and for this very purpose. Terrafame has applied for an environmental permit for gypsum pond KS3 in August 2017. The permit decision was expected to be made by the autumn of 2020, but it has been delayed, which is why the new pond has to be taken into use before the permit decision.
