Sotkamo municipality grants building permit for battery chemicals plant 6.7.2018 13:15

Terrafame has obtained a building permit from the municipality of Sotkamo for its planned battery chemicals plant. The municipality’s building permit authorities have granted the permit for two buildings in accordance with the application, which was submitted in May.

The project involves a 7,750 square metre (m2) building for the crystallisation phase of the production process and a 10,540 square metre building for the extraction phase, to be constructed in the company’s current industrial area in Sotkamo, Finland. Both buildings are planned to have supporting structures made out of steel. Otherwise, the buildings will be made of prefabricated structures. The facade material will be sheet metal. As shown in the permit application, the buildings will stand side by side on the opposite side of the railway line to the current metals production plant.

“Obtaining a building permit is one important milestone in this project. We are now proceeding to the earthwork construction and continuing with the detailed designing of the plant,” says CEO Joni Lukkaroinen.

Terrafame has been investigating the production of battery chemicals since the beginning of 2017 and, over the past months, the project has progressed from the feasibility study phase to the detailed engineering phase. The company is also carrying out an Environmental Impact Assessment or EIA procedure, for which an EIA report is currently being prepared.
