Kainuu Regional Rescue Authority and Terrafame expand rescue collaboration to improve local safety 9.12.2016 14:52

Kainuu Regional Rescue Authority and Terrafame Ltd. have entered into a collaboration agreement on expanding rescue services. With the agreement, Terrafame’s fire brigade and its equipment may be used outside the mining site for various emergency assignments. To date, the company’s fire brigade has worked in versatile fire and rescue related assignments at the mining site.

The total number of personnel of Terrafame’s rescue function is 26 trained persons, with 4–5 persons regularly working on shift. The fire brigade’s equipment includes, for example, two heavy and two light fire engines, boats, a snow mobile as well as communication equipment. The target response time is 10 minutes.

“The mine’s nearest local rescue department is located in Sotkamo, more than 30 minutes away. Thanks to this collaboration, it is most likely that we can now get a fire brigade unit to villages close to the mine faster than before,” says Anssi Parviainen of Kainuu Regional Rescue Authority.

Terrafame is also pleased about the expanding collaboration which will benefit the residents of the surrounding area as well as Terrafame’s personnel.

“Our fire brigade has plenty of fire and rescue expertise which will now be put into broader use. We believe that collaboration such as this will improve the safety of the local people,” says Veli-Matti Hilla, Terrafame’s Chief Sustainability Officer.

In emergency situations, Terrafame’s fire brigade operates as a fire brigade assisting Kainuu Regional Rescue Authority, in accordance with Finland’s Rescue Act. According to Ari-Pekka Pappila, Terrafame’s Rescue Foreman, typical emergency situations outside the mining site could include, for instance, traffic accidents, extinction assignments, smoke and chemicals diving as well as water rescue assignments. In the future, Kainuu Regional Rescue Authority and Terrafame will collaborate even more closely also on training and exercises.

The collaboration between Kainuu Regional Rescue Authority and Terrafame will take effect on 1 January 2017.
